The treatment of varicose veins has changed significantly over the last 10–15 years. Between 1910 and 2000, the classic surgical procedure for trunk varicosis involving high ligation ('crossectomy') and 'stripping' was refined continuously. Nevertheless, the morbidity of the operation remained relevant, particularly due to discomfort along the stripping tract.

In simplified terms, the junction of the leaking saphenous vein in the groin area was surgically exposed, a wire was threaded into the vein, and the vein was pulled out with it down to the mid-lower leg.

The development of laser therapy has now made the procedure significantly less invasive. The vein no longer needs to be exposed or removed, but is simply closed using laser energy.
